Bipolar Disorder Treatment for Women

Bipolar disorder treatment for women is an increasingly prevalent need since the mental condition that can affect adolescents and adults. It’s most common symptom is the marked change in personality from a very manic state to a depressive state. People with bipolar disorder, previously known as manic-depressive disorder, oscillate from very happy periods to very sad periods, sometimes very quickly.

Symptoms of Bipolar Disorder

Christian bipolar disorder treatment centers have learned that oftentimes there is an addiction to drugs or alcohol co-occurring with the manic-depressive episodes. Dual Diagnosis refers to any situation where someone is dealing with a mental health condition and an addiction at the same time.  In some circumstances, there are multiple mental health conditions to deal with as well as the bipolar disorder coupled.  For other people, there is more than one addiction to deal with, such bipolar disorder coupled with alcoholism and cocaine addiction.

There are different types of bipolar disorder, but they all include episodes of mania and depression to some degree. These types are known as bipolar type I, bipolar type II, cyclothymic disorder, rapid-cycling bipolar disorder and mixed bipolar disorder. Each one is different, and getting an accurate diagnosis is important because it means getting the right type of treatment. For example, someone with Bipolar type I has had at least one full-blown manic episode, where as with bipolar disorder type II, the moods cycle between manic and depressive but the moods never hit full blown manic. With rapid cycling, the person can cycle between mania and depression at least four times in a single year. Mixed bipolar is common, with people alternating between depressed and elevated over time. Cyclothymia is a milder form of bipolar disorder but is marked by the same type of mood shifting between high moods and low moods.

Bipolar Disorder Statistics

  • It is important to understand that bipolar disorder can affect basically anyone. This disorder impacts approximately 5.7 million adults in the United States alone, meaning 2.6% of the adult population in the country.
  • The median onset age for this disorder is 25 years old, though the disorder can also develop in early childhood, and there are also people who do not develop bipolar disorder until their 40s and 50s as well.
  • It has been found that bipolar disorder can be developed equally among men and women, which sets it apart from other depressive disorders and anxiety disorders which tend to impact women more than men. It should be noted, however, that women tend to experience the rapid cycling side of bipolar disorder more than men, meaning that they tend to shift from manic to depressive more readily than men.
  • Studies have shown that approximately two-thirds of all people who have been diagnosed with bipolar disorder also have at least one close relative who has the illness, or who has unipolar major depressive disorder, and what this indicates is that there is a hereditary component to it.
A Christian bipolar disorder treatment program can be available both as an inpatient program and an outpatient program, and many actually are offered as a hybrid of the two, meaning that patients begin in a full-time inpatient program and then transition into a part-time outpatient program when they feel well enough to return to their everyday lives, family, friends and other loved ones.  It is important not to transition back to your life until you feel completely confident, though, because too much stress can cause relapse.
