Family Therapy Program

Family therapy program helps if any one member of a family is struggling with mental illness or an addiction, the rest of the family is troubled too. Everyone’s life is closely intertwined with those of loved ones and alcoholism effects on family can be devastating.

Family members often feel a need to “save” the addict in the family when they see addiction’s harmful consequences on the addict’s emotions, relationships, and health. While the intentions are obviously pure, actions to “save” someone can result in codependency and enabling behavior – allowing or sometimes inadvertently helping the addict to go further down the wrong path.

New Creation provides a specialized Christian family therapy program which supports the families of our clients through their own personal journey of addiction recovery.

The Real Issues at Play

The true root causes of drug addiction and alcoholism are still up for some debate. Some believe genetics are the main factor, and others link it to psychological causes. Our family therapy isn’t concerned with laying blame, but instead looking at the factors, past and present which contribute to an addiction – and eliminating them.

Education

Drugs affect both the mind and body. While very often the people around the addict can clearly see the toll being taken by addiction, the users themselves can be stuck deep in denial. She may not be able to see the problem without help. We offer psychoeducational groups that educate our clients about the ravaging effects of drug use.

If their loved ones aren’t informed either, ignorance can be dangerous. This is particularly true in the cases of legal drugs and easily available drugs such as alcohol and prescription medication. We teach everyone who takes part in our family therapy important, Christian-based lessons about what the patient is going through in treatment and how to help. The understanding and support of the family and loved ones helps recovery immeasurably.

Codependency – How to Recognize It

Enabling or codependent behavior is a pattern many families find themselves slipping into when one family member is an addict. It’s understandable, they are just trying to help. Enabling behavior can include giving someone money, covering up their habit, justifying their behavior to others or even committing crimes or lying to authorities for the addict.

Family Therapy

New Creation family therapy program encourages every member of the patient’s family to participate in talk therapy together, and change the way they interact with the recovering addict for the better.

Continuing Support

Ultimately, the codependent relationship must change, and our therapy can guide family members through this change so they’re constantly informed and feel in control.
