Scripture and recovery from addiction can help with this not so easy task. It takes strength and courage to take back your life from the grip of drug or alcohol addiction. Many people find that strength in counseling, the love of family or their faith in God. Memorizing scripture and recovery can be another weapon in an arsenal of betterment tools.
The Bible Reveals God’s Plan
Psalm 119:9 says, “How can a young man keep his way pure? By guarding it according to your Word.” The Lord has promised us that His Word has the power to help us overcome our struggles and sins. The Bible is the blueprint that God has given us for daily living. In His Word, we find His plan for our lives. We also find His wisdom to accomplish that plan. God wants what is best for you. When you follow His guide, He can lead you into recovery.
God’s Word Gives Us Power in Scripture and Recovery
As a Christian, it is important to study the Bible, but memorizing scripture is also essential and can be a powerful step in your alcohol and drug recovery. Psalm 119:11 goes on to say, “I have hidden your word in my heart that I might not sin against you.” In the first chapter of Psalms, David writes that God blesses those who meditate on God’s word day and night. To meditate on it day and night, means to know it deep down in your soul.
God’s Word Gives Us Strength to Overcome
When Jesus was in the wilderness, He was tempted by Satan three times. Each time He answered with Scripture. That scripture served to remind Him that He didn’t have to give into temptation. When you struggle to feel worthy of God’s love or when you worry that you will never be free from the hold drugs have in your life, scripture can be a potent instrument in your recovery. The apostle Paul taught us that we put to death the sins of the flesh through the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God.
Set aside time each day to not only read the Bible, but to memorize God’s Word. When you memorize scripture, it becomes a part of who you are and what you believe. It is always with you and you are able to recall it when you need strength or comfort.
