The struggle with addiction can leave you feeling hopeless and alone. Drugs and alcohol have the power to destroy marriages and break apart families. They can even leave you wondering if your addiction means that God has turned his back on you. Is it possible to be dependent on drugs or alcohol and still be saved? Is Christian drug therapy the answer?
Saved by Grace through Faith
Ephesians 2:8 tells us, “For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith, and this is not from yourselves, it is the gift of God. “
Your salvation was a gift. You didn’t do anything to earn it. You simply believed that Christ’s work on the cross was enough to pay for all the sins you have ever committed as well as all the sins you will ever commit. That gift of salvation is still a gift today through Christian rehabilitation programs. God isn’t going to turn his back on you or snatch away your salvation based on your actions. He gave it to you because you believed and you keep it through that continued belief.
All Christians Struggle
Everyone deals with temptation. Everyone struggles to lead the life God calls us to. Even the apostle Paul struggled to follow God’s will. In Romans 7:15 he said, “I do not understand what I do. For what I want to do, I do not do, but what I hate, I do.”
While the mental and physical consequences of addiction can be worse than the consequences of many things we struggle with, in the eyes of God no sin is worse than another. Sin is sin. No Christian is perfect. If perfection were a requirement for being a Christian, all the Christian rehab shelters in the world would be empty.
God Has a Plan for You
God loves you. Before the earth was created, before you were born and before you struggled with addiction, He knew your name. He knew that you would need a savior and He planned to send His son to die for your sins. Does he want you to struggle with addiction? Of course not. He wants you to live your life fulfilling the potential He sees in you. He wants the best for you, but remember, He understands your struggles and in Hebrews 13:5 He promised you, “Never will I leave you; never will I forsake you.”
