Rehab and prayer are there for you if your child is suffering with alcohol or drug addiction. Your children are your babies, no matter how old they are. You want the best for them. You never stop worrying about them and you would give your life to make their lives better. When they are in pain, you are in pain. You cry at their losses and cheer their victories. You are invested in their lives. That is why you feel so helpless when your son or your daughter struggles with addiction.
When your son or daughter needs substance abuse treatment, there is little that you can do to help them, until they are ready to receive that help. If they are adults, you can’t order them into a 12 step program. Even forcing your child into rehab won’t cure his addiction if he isn’t ready to admit he has a problem and acknowledge he needs help.
The Power of Rehab and Prayer
If your son or daughter refuses to go into drug rehab, and you feel powerless to affect their recovery, there is one thing you can do. You can pray. The Bible tells us in the book of James, “Therefore confess your sins to each other and pray for each other so that you may be healed. The prayer of a righteous person is powerful and effective.”
In Matthew chapter seven Jesus asks, ““Which of you, if your son asks for bread, will give him a stone? If you, then, though you are evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your Father in heaven give good gifts to those who ask him!”
God understands the love you have for your child. He loves you in the same way that you love your son or daughter. He loves your child even more than you can imagine.
How to Pray
If you are ready to pray for your child, but don’t know how, just speak from your heart. Prayer is nothing more than having a heartfelt conversation with God. Ask Him to soften your son or daughter’s heart to the idea of rehab. Ask Him to bring people into your child’s life who will encourage them into rehab. Tell him your fears and the desires you have for your child. As you pray, remember Hebrews 11:6 gives us the promise that God rewards those who earnestly seek him.
