Addiction and the Bible, what does what the Bible really say about drug and alcohol addiction. Honestly, the Bible does not directly address the terms “drug addiction” and “alcohol addiction.” However, it clearly addresses the matters of sin, the sinful nature, idolatry and the fact that God can fulfill all needs. According to the Bible, alcohol and drug addictions are just a couple of sins in which people indulge relentlessly when they search for satisfaction and happiness outside of the bosom of the Lord. Addiction and the Bible: Exodus 20:3 Thou shalt have no other gods before me.
The above-mentioned verse is the very first of God’s 10 Commandments. Idolatry is a major sin against the Lord. The problem with addiction is that an addicted person makes the object of the addiction (drugs, alcohol, gambling, unhealthy relationships, etc.) first in his or her life. Therefore, the addicted person sins by committing repetitious acts of idolatry.
Ephesians 5:18: And Be not drunk with wine, wherein is excess; but be filled with the Spirit.
The above verse clearly states that man should not drink an excess of wine to the point of drunkenness. It is safe to assume that one should not take an excess of drugs either. Psalms 37:4 – Delight thyself also in the LORD; and he shall give thee the desires of thine heart.
This verse speaks volumes to people. It explains exactly how one can receive the desires of the heart. Addiction begins in the heart as a deep need for something. Many people do not realize what that something is. Addicted persons try to fill the empty space with something that seems satisfying. God has the remedy.
Psalm 16:11: In thy presence is fulness of joy; at thy right hand there are pleasures for evermore.
Again, this verse talks about the benefits that one can receive in the bosom of the Lord. It was written by someone who knew the Lord quite well. One can assume from this verse that God can provide the long-lasting joy and pleasures that an addicted person seeks from drugs and alcohol.
